Brief

Blood donation numbers in the UK have been on a steady decline in recent years. This was only exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. After seeing the success other areas have been having with utilising mobile technologies to help their users. This project was to investigate whether the same could be done for blood transfusion services. With the hoped outcome being an increase in new and recurring donors.
UKBlood is a mobile app that is intended to bring together the 4 blood transfusion services of the UK, into one easy to use solution for: booking and managing appointment, viewing blood stock levels, and more.

User Participation

This project had a couple of user participation sessions throughout the process. The first round of participation was to gauge what features users would like to see within the application. As well as letting them rank a selection of defined features. The feature set was then established and data gathered from the participants were funnelled into the MoSCoW and Kano methods.

MoSCoW and Kano

Using the MoSCoW method to determine which potential features should be prioritised and taken forward, and which should be dropped or postponed for further development.
The Kano model was used alongside the MoSCoW method as an additional method for establishing which features should be prioritised. Placing the features on a 2 axis chart, one for user satisfaction and the other showing the functionality it provides to the user.

Wireframing

Before any finalising of the app was done, wireframing was used to block out the pages of the application. Using this method to alter the layout of screens to gauge the best layout of the content. It also gave a good overview of which screens might have been missing and then allowing them to be created.

Book Appointments

Donors can book appointments for their local donation centres. Choosing a date and time that suits them best. Enabling them to plan ahead.

Digital Donor Card

The digital donor card gives donors a convenient way of proving their donor status. Showing their donor number, their blood type and number of donations. The donor card would be scannable via staff to update their health form status. Donors can have up to 4 different cards displayed depending on if they're registered with that transfusion service.

Blood Stock

Donors can check their local region's blood stock. Seeing which blood types are in need or urgent donors. Both the blood type and the number of estimated days of supply are listed.

Achievements

Donors much like the tradition reward system gain achievements dependant on the number of completed donations they give.

Health Form

Digitising the health form that all donors must fill in before donating their blood. This allows donors to fill in the form anywhere, saving them time and cutting down on paper use.
